Forward Operating Base Bernstein with Task Force 120th

FOB Bernstein was located on a 1940s era British military airbase with a number of concrete hangers and barracks. It is a few miles away from the city of Tuz Khurmatu and around 100 miles north of Baghdad. An Explosive Ordinance Disposal team lead by Staff Sergeant Eric Steffeney was attached to us and performed many dangerous missions in disarming explosives that could have killed and wounded American Soldiers and also Iraqis who lived in the area. A few months after TF 120th deployed back to the States, SSG Steffeney was killed while disarming a bomb.

The FOB was named in honor of First Lieutenant David R. Bernstein who was Killed In Action on 18 October 2003 while serving with the 508th Infantry Battalion, 173rd Infantry Brigade.

Palace bathroom that did not work. Soldiers used latrines located outside of building.

Palace sink

This palace is located in Tikrit, Iraq on high ground along the western side of the Tigris River. During OIF II, the First Infantry Division used the palace as it's headquarters with the eventual goal of turning it over to the Iraqis who would then turn it into a college. Insurgents would attack the base using mortars on a sporadic basis. A bridge sits below the palace and provided a route across the Tigris. The bridge was destroyed by the US Air Force during the invasion.

To the right is a poem that my wife wrote for our wedding. I carried it in my helmet while in Iraq as a good luck charm.
The VetPage section enables those who served in the US Military or family members of deceased Veterans to display photographs and describe some of the events during their time in service.
