Christine and Andy Foster

During 2007, Christine  served in Iraq with the 478th Civil Affairs Battalion which was assigned to the 2nd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division. The picture in the center shows Andy in 1982 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma with B Company 4/31st Infantry (Mechanized) Polar Bears. Their unit was firing mortars for the students at the Forward Observer School. The third picture is of SGT Andy Foster in 1984 on a three week border patrol along the East German border. Their unit, HHC 1/39th Infantry, 2nd Brigade 8th Infantry Division, was attached to the 2/11th Cavalry for the mission.

Fort Sherman housing. Not bad at all.

Panama Canal facilities. Very impressive.

This dam used to regulate the water level in the Canal Zone. It empties into the Chagris riger which drains into the Atlantic Ocean.

An 81mm mortar team from HHC 2/22IN practicing at Fort Sherman. I was later to be their Platoon Leader.

A cargo vessel only a few minutes away from exiting the canal zone and entering the Atlantic Ocean. On the far side, is the Panamanian city of Colon.

Bob Dylan's shipwrecked sailboat in the same location 8 years later. Actually, too small to be a rock stars sailboat. See related pic on 75th VetPage.

Road located on Fort Sherman, Panama.

The Panama canal is in the upper left. The jungle terrian made for very slow going and limited helicopter support.

Map showing Fort Sherman, the opening to the Atlantic, the city of Colon and the Chagres River and Fort San Lorengo in the lower left.

Soldiers practicing STABO operations with UH-60 helicopter in support.

In 1996, the 2/22IN Battalion flew from Fort Drum, NY to Panama and the Soldiers of the "Triple Deuce" went through training at the Jungle Operations Training Center. It closed down in 1999. At the entrance to the Chagres River are the ruins of Fort San Lorenzo. Stabilized Airborne Operations (STABO) is used when Soldiers cannot get to a clear area that is large enough to enable their extraction helicopter to land. The Battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Terry, who would return later to the 10th Mountain as the Deputy Commanding General For Operations.
